Carbs Are Our Friends!

Hello Loyal Soup People! This week I’d like to chat about carbohydrates. Or, as we often call them these days – carbs. For a variety of reasons, carbs have been vilified lately, as they’ve come to be associated with weight gain and disease. Unfortunately, many people completely eliminate carbs from their meals, and end up with a diet lacking in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The key is to understand what a carb is, and which ones to eat. Our bodies need these foods for mental and physical energy.

Sugars, starches, and fiber are made up of carbohydrates. Many plant based foods consist of carbs. Unprocessed versions are always the healthiest because they are full of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Processed carbs are indeed unhealthy because not only is the fiber removed, but it is often replaced with sugar, fat, and salt for flavor. White bread and pasta, soda, cookies, chips, and donuts are all examples of processed carbs. They’ve been modified from their original form into something unhealthy. For example, whole wheat pasta is much healthier than its white counterpart because the wheat hasn’t been processed to remove the fiber, etc.

Any diet that calls for the removal of of fruits and vegetables (carbs!) seems questionable to me. The key to carbs, as with all foods, is moderation. Once your body’s energy needs are met, food can be stored as fat. Your body will take the extra calories and store them for later! That’s what our bodies innately do! The key is to eat a variety of food, including carbs, throughout the day. Listen to your body, don’t overeat – carbs or protein, and you’ll be feeding your body properly.
