Getting Back to Basics
Hello Loyal Soup People!
Let’s talk about getting back to basics. Waaayyyyy back… to when we were babies. When we are infants and toddlers, we don’t emotionally eat, mindlessly nosh, and sit down to meals at set schedules. We eat only when we are hungry and stop when we are satiated…. i.e. habits all of us aspire to have as adults!
At what point do we move away from this healthy approach to food? It really varies. We sometimes reward children for good behavior with sweet food. We don’t provide dessert until plates are clean. We provide comfort during difficult times with food. All of these practices lead to unhealthy eating habits.
So, how do we go back to our natural approaches to food? Mindfulness. Listening to our bodies. Staying in tune with signals. Chewing slowly and savoring each bite. Not eating according to a set schedule, but instead feeding ourselves when our bodies are asking for fuel. If we find ourselves reaching for sweets when needing comfort, recognize that this is probably a learned habit and not natural. Get back in tune with our original habits. And retraining our palates. Filling ourselves with healthy, nourishing food, and not empty calories.
Meal by meal, day by day, we can return to our natural eating habits. And the empty, mindless calories will fall away (along with some added pounds!).
