Let's Talk Indulgence

Friends -

I've spent a lot of time lately thinking about indulgences. Some people indulge a bit more than they'd like, while others treat themselves to something special only on certain days or occasions. After receiving a few questions about this topic, I thought I'd share my approach to indulgences.

I like to take the "long view." Yes, there is nothing quite like a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. Unfortunately, we know that too much cake, ice cream, or cookies can lead to obesity, diabetes, and more. When I think about indulging in these things, I ponder the longer term risks. I'm extremely fortunate to be in my 70's and still have my health. And I do not take that for granted. But I know that I have to work to stay healthy. I'm still able (in normal times!) to play with my grand kids and hike with my husband and children. So when I'm offered the opportunity to indulge, I factor in my quality of life. However, I do want to make sure that I get to enjoy a bit of sweetness! So I've trained myself to enjoy some dessert on Friday nights. That's my special night. I'm so ingrained in this habit, that I don't even crave sweets on other days.

I want to be clear about something. It took me a very long time to get here. When I was younger, I would often eat my kids' desserts and cookies. However, getting older, and a few health scares forced me to re-prioritize.

Enjoy life! And when indulging - think about the long game.

Sending you love and health.

Love,

Soupermom
