Wear Your Sunscreen

Health Tip from Soupermom!

Hello Loyal Soup People! I wrote a few months ago about the importance of sunscreen. As many of you know, I feel very strongly about the importance of wearing it daily – all year long! However, it is especially important during the hot summer months. The type of sunscreen you use is also incredibly important. I recommend referencing the Environmental Working Group’s list to choose the best sunscreen. Going a step further, I’d like to share a few tips about applying sunscreen. If you don’t put sunscreen on correctly, you might as well not put it on at all!

1 – Be sure to apply enough. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, most people apply only 25% – 50% of the recommended amount of sunscreen. It is difficult to provide an exact recommendation for everyone, as we all come in different shapes and sizes! You want to apply a solid layer everywhere that will be exposed to the sun. And don’t forget to re-apply every two hours or more if you are exercising or swimming.

2 – Apply sunscreen before you dress. How many times have you taken off a bathing suit and found a sliver or spot on your skin that is bright red because you didn’t cover it with sunscreen? The best way to avoid this is to apply your sunscreen before you dress. That way you’ll cover every spot, regardless of the shape or size of your bathing suit or shirt.

3 – Use new sunscreen. The FDA requires that sunscreen retain its strength for three years. However, sunscreen manufacturers are not required to put expiration dates on their products. Mark the purchase date on the bottle so you can be sure your sunscreen hasn’t expired. However, if you are applying a few ounces a day, you should go through several bottles over the summer and won’t need to worry about expired sunscreen!

4 – Don’t forget your lips! You can just as easily damage the skin on your lips as anywhere else on your body. Use lip specific sunscreen to protect your lips and keep them moist. Have fun and add a little color if you’d like.

Follow these tips and you’ll have a safe and sunburn (and damage) free summer!
