Meet my friend Magnolia. She’s six years old, and, as you can see, adorable and souper. What you don’t see in this picture is that Magnolia is suffering from a rare disease called Rett Syndrome. Until the age of three, Magnolia was progressing beautifully – running around, singing, talking, dancing. And then things changed. Rett began to slowly take hold of her little body. Rett is progressive, so far Magnolia has lost her ability to speak and use her hands. She experiences frequent seizures and often has difficulty breathing. She also requires an eye gaze technology computer to communicate.

I met Maggie this past summer via a blog post written by her mother. After watching the destruction and havoc wreaked by the storms and hurricanes of the summer, Maggie’s mom asked – would they survive such a storm? Would they be able to evacuate with all of Maggie’s equipment necessary for her special needs?

Unfortunately, this is the case for thousands of other girls and boys that are victims of this vicious disease. Rett knows no boundaries – economic, geographic, race – Rett is equally cruel to everyone.

The good news? A cure is on the horizon. Urgent funding is needed for more research. Can you imagine knowing that money is the only obstacle preventing a healthy life for your child?

So we here at Soupergirl thought we’d try to help. February is Magnolia’s Month at Soupergirl. Every day at the shop, one of the soups will be Magnolia’s Soup. A portion of the revenue from the sales of that soup will be donated to the cause.

You can also help out by making a donation online. We’ve set up a special Souper Magnolia campaign online. Quite literally, every dollar helps us get one step closer to a cure. A cure for Magnolia, and the thousands of other children gripped by Rett.

IMG_0576Free. Yes, we thought we’d start with that word. This summer, we’re all about customer appreciation. You, dear soup eaters, are incredible, so we want to say thank you. Many of you already know about Triple Point Tuesdays! Come in on Tuesday and receive three stamps on your loyalty card. Spend $25 or more and receive a free pint of soup. We’re now launching Gimme Three Thursdays! Stop by either Soupergirl store any Thursday in June and July, buy two items, and receive the third for free! Please note that the free item must be of equal or lesser value than the two that are purchased. Fan of gazpacho? Come load up on Thursdays! Do your shopping for the weekend on Thursdays. Every day is a good day for soup… but especially Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thanks, Loyal Soup Eaters!!

beetmeThe beet is back! Dance to the beet! That’s right, beet gazpacho is back on the menu. Pay no attention to the fact that we have been magically transported to Seattle where it rains all day every day. May is here, beets are in season, let’s make some gazpacho.

We’ll be sending out the gazpacho to stores and markets all over town. We’ll also have some at both locations beginning on Thursday. As many of you know, our gazpachos are, well, a bit addictive. The beet one… it’s as pretty as it is tasty! A deep purple color that should have a Crayola named after it! You *may* not want to wear a white shirt while slurping as it likes to leave its mark… permanently… on clothing!

In terms of the rest of our gazpacho flavors… we’ll start rolling them out soon. The cold rain that has dominated the region has not been great for summer crops. Everything is delayed a few weeks. We’ll keep harassing the farmers!!

spinachgarnersAs you know, we are very committed to sourcing from local farmers. We take it pretty seriously (which is why we still don’t have gazpacho… no early tomatoes yet!!). This week, however, we’re really quite proud of our local sourcing for the Passover holiday menu. If you ordered from our Passover menu, or maybe just dine at Soupergirl over the next few weeks, you’ll be enjoying:

– Beets and potatoes from Tuscarora Organic Coop (organic!)
– All kinds of greens (spinach, collards) from Garner’s Produce
– Sweet potatoes and carrots from Twin Spring Fruit Farm
– Apples and butternut squash from Spring Valley Farm and Orchard
– Turnips from the Farm at Sunnyside (organic!)

Thank you for helping us support our fantastic local farms. We hope you’ll taste the difference!

And yes indeed, our Passover pre-order menu is now closed. However, we will try to keep our refrigerators stocked with Passover soups, salads, and seder items throughout the week. Call ahead to check availability! And we will be open next week from Monday through Thursday. Come dine with us!

JCCYes, you read that correctly. Soupergirl soup is now a Broadway star. Sort of. The new production at Theater J features our soup! The actors serve and eat it on stage! We couldn’t believe it until we saw it for ourselves. But, yes indeed, during opening night they served Carrot Dill! We were gushing. Our little soup is all grown up! She won’t even talk to us anymore. We need go to through her agent. Thanks a lot, SOUP!  OK actually, Theater J does indeed feature our soup in their production of Falling Out of Time, running through April 17th. It is an incredible, unique, almost indescribable play. We do not want to reveal too much, other than to say we have not stopped thinking about it since opening night. It is original, challenging, and beautiful. And if you sit in the right seat, you are served soup! Seriously! We highly recommend that you check it out – and not just for the soup.

Look how much the kids like free soup!Free soup, you say? Indeed!! We’re starting Triple Stamp Tuesdays at BOTH locations this Tuesday! Plus, come in on Tuesdays, spend $20 or more, and get a FREE pint of soup! Plus, with any purchase of $5 or more we’ll give you THREE stamps on your Soupergirl loyalty card! This special will run for all of March at both our M Street AND Takoma locations. Yes, our soup is available at many stores and markets in and around the DMV. However, visiting our stores is the most special, and dare we say, fun way to purchase our products. First of all, the stores are the only places to get our salads, sandwiches, and other goodies. Plus, you can sample all the soups before you buy! Plus, our staff is so darn friendly. And good looking. How could they not be? They eat soup every single day! They have aged backwards. You have to see it to believe it. So this March, come on in for a visit. Get the true Soupergirl experience. Especially on Tuesdays! Free soup, ya’ll!

Look how happy the kids are about free soup! Free soup!!

IMG_1644This is the LAST WEEK to vote in the City Paper’s annual Best of DC contest. Boy oh boy we would really appreciate your vote!! This handy link takes you DIRECTLY to the Soupergirl voting page. We’ve made it THAT easy. Just think, you can vote and eat soup with total impunity. Or, you could skip it, and next week feel SO BAD. So we’re saving you that guilty feeling you get when you forget to vote. This child pictured here on the left… he’s going to get so upset if you don’t vote. Don’t upset this little fella! You can thank us later. Or, better yet, we can thank you NOW! Seriously – thank you, you guys! And sorry for all the nagging. We’ll stop now.

4 days.16 soups-brightYou guys – we’re into our fourth week of the Non-Cleanse Soup “Cleanse” and the results are pretty incredible. Most people are signing up for multiple “cleanses.” People are dropping weight, changing their eating habits, feeling energized. One person even reported being able to fly. One of these statements isn’t true, but that’s not important now!

“Cleanser” Abby, who drove in from Annapolis to give it a shot, reported that by Day Two she was completely energized and didn’t need her daily power nap. She felt cleaner, lighter, and healthier.

From another “cleanser:” “The soups were fresh and filling. I never felt hungry… I experienced a loss of cravings (sugar, salt, dairy, even carbs!). I would definitely do it again…”

And another – “I’m very grateful for the Non-Cleanse Soup “Cleanse” for raising this awareness in me by tailoring such a filling, healthy, and thoughtful menu. It was indeed souper!”

If you don’t believe us, check out what the New York Times has to say!!

Seriously people, what are you waiting for? Four days. Sixteen soups. Immediate results. The details are available on our special “cleanse” website. Check it out!

IMG_1532January 4th – the most depressing day of the year?? Or… oh, whatever. It’s finally really cold, the holidays are over, and the sun sets right after lunch. But… we’ve got soup!! And, an opportunity to join the Souper-team!! That’s fun, right? We’re looking for some soup lovers to join our M Street location retail team. We’re also searching for more brand representatives to help get more people hooked on soup! For more information or to apply, please visit our Careers Page. Bonus! You get to jump into high chairs! So much fun! And a little weird…

052914_soupergirl_0031A few scrupulous Loyal Soup Eaters pointed out that Souperdad was missing from our holiday greeting from the Souperfamily in last week’s email! What about Souperdad??  Sorry, folks! Sorry, Souperdad. So, the entire Souper-family wishes everyone a happy, healthy, and joyous new year.

We’ve had another crazy year, full of wild ups and humbling lows. Throughout it all, you, our kind and wonderful Soup Eaters, have supported us at every step. It might sound cliche, but you really are our inspiration. When we try new soups, think about expansion, and just ponder our every day business, we think of you. “What would our Loyal Soup Eaters want,” we ask ourselves. Please keep the emails, comments, phone calls, Facebook posts, etc. coming. We’re listening! We want to hear from you!! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Speaking of new things, we have something really, really cool debuting in 2016. It is going to be extremely souper. Seriously.

In housekeeping news, both stores will close at 4:00 PM on New Years Eve and will remain closed on New Years Day. Soup up early, folks!!
