December is here, the holiday season is officially upon us, and it feels a bit bewildering. Many of us (myself included) are having trouble distinguishing one day from the next. Traditions have been broken, new habits have been formed (not always great ones…), and many of us feel a bit lost.
Enter mindful eating. Whenever I begin to feel lost or a bit unhinged, I try to return to my mindful eating practices. Mindful eating can help you to stay healthy and even lose a little weight. It can also help ease anxiety and calm the mind.
Try viewing each meal as a scheduled break in your day. A true break – meaning put down your phone, step away from your computer, and create some quiet. Pause, wash your hands, take several deep breaths, and explore a moment of gratitude before eating. Relish each bite – take in the aroma, the flavor, and the texture. Put down your fork or spoon in between each bite. Take your time.
When we truly pay attention to our body’s signals, as well as the food we eat, we end up eating less. When we slow down, we allow our bodies to properly digest and we know when we’re satiated. Also, eating a meal slowly allows our mind to calm and refocus.
In short – a mindful eating practice can provide healing for the entire body. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
