Hello Loyal Soup People! As many of you have probably heard, “sitting is the new smoking.” In short, even if you exercise consistently before or after work, sitting motionless all day can be very detrimental to your health – even eliminating all the gains you’ve made from your workouts!
Some people have chosen to use standing desks. However, that doesn’t work for everyone, especially if you don’t wear supportive and comfortable shoes to work! Of course, we all know some obvious tricks – take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to an associate’s office to chat instead of emailing, etc. However, there are a few exercises that you can do at your desk that will periodically raise your heart rate throughout the day. There is growing evidence that doing little exercises like that can be extraordinarily beneficial.
Here a few exercises you can do right at the office to get your heart rate up periodically, keep your blood flowing, and keep you healthy:
– Knee raises – every 45 minutes or so, do a minute of knee raises. Literally jog in place, raising your knees as high as you can. Do this for a minute straight. If you feel up for it, rest for 30 seconds, and then repeat.
– Calf raises – Stand up on your tippy toes, hold for one second and lower. It’s as simple as that! Do 15-20 in a row, rest for thirty seconds, and repeat. If you want to make it more challenging, raise one foot off the ground and do a calf raise on one leg!
– Jump Squats – Old fashioned jumping up and down is a great way to raise your heart rate! Place you feet shoulder width apart, lower your rear like you are going to sit in a seat. When your thighs are parallel to the ground, jump up as high as you can! Do three sets of ten jumps.
These are just a few ideas to get you out of your chair and moving during the day. The most important thing is to move. Remaining in a sitting position all day is, quite simply, very bad for your health. Walk, squat, jump – do anything to get out of that chair!
