Hydrate Responsibly this Summer

Hello Loyal Soup People!

July 4th is here – summer is in full swing! Which brings me to the topic of hydration. Staying hydrated is incredibly important all year long – but especially in the summer. The effects of dehydration can be as simple as dry skin and lips, but they can also be fatal.

Unfortunately, I see a lot of people adding all kinds of extra sugar and empty calories to their bodies when working out or even when just out and about. The truth is, the best way to hydrate is to drink water. Calorie free, additive free, pure and simple water. Unless you are a marathon runner, you simply do not need any added sugars when hydrating. Many of us go to the gym a few times a week, or maybe go for a weekend hike, or an evening run, etc. We are not burning thousands of calories a session. Hard core athletes do – like the ones for which the top selling sport-drink was developed. Here are some hard numbers – a 20oz bottle of a traditional sports drink contains 34 grams of sugar. The recommended maximum daily sugar intake for women is 25 grams and 37 grams for men. This is why many school districts have banned soft drinks and sports drinks.

If water seems boring to you, add a splash of lemon or lime juice. Try dropping some fresh summer herbs and vegetables in your bottle. How about cucumber mint water? So refreshing!
