Keep a Clean Kitchen!

Hello Loyal Soup People! Today I’m going to write about how to keep a cleaner kitchen. I’ve read a lot lately about how easy it is for germs and bacteria to sneak into our kitchen, and then our food. In fact, a recent study conducted by NSF International (a non-profit agency that establishes safety standards for lots of equipment found in the home), found that the kitchen is often the dirtiest place in the home! Fortunately, there are easy ways to clean up and keep your family safe!

– Microwave your sponges. These items are often so dirty that they are banned in restaurants! Moist, wet, and porous sponges are the perfect environments for bacteria to grow. However, they are also easy to clean! Simply microwave your sponge (and dish cloth) every night for a minute to kill any bacteria. Just be sure that the sponge is moist before microwaving! You can also put them in the dishwasher.

– Use soap and water on your counter tops. Just plain water isn’t enough to remove dirt and germs. Add a small drizzle of dish soap to help scrub away any potential bacteria and other residual germs.

– Pour boiling water in your sink. Sinks are usually the dirtiest places in the kitchen. I don’t recommend filling your sink up with water to clean produce or anything else. Use a bowl instead. At night, wipe down the sink with water and soap and pour boiling water over the surface to fully clean it.

– Keep your refrigerator clean and cold. Every home refrigerator should have a thermometer in the middle of the second shelf. Make sure the temperature holds steady at 38 or below. Most bacteria cannot survive at that temperature. However, Listeria can withstand cold temperatures, so it is important to clean up any spills immediately with soap and water. Every few weeks you should try to wipe down the shelves and drawers to make sure the refrigerator stays clean and bacteria-free.

Kitchens can be ground zero for bacteria growth in our home. However, following a few simple steps can help keep you and your family safe and clean. Of course, always remember to properly wash your hands before every meal to be extra safe!!
