Too much salt is bad, mm’kay? “Yes, Soupergirl, I know,” you say, reverently. But we are eating in the time of an interesting paradox — the more we learn about proper nutrition, the more we ignore! While our knowledge about food is expanding every day, so are our waistlines. This point is illustrated perfectly in Jane Brody’s article in The New York Times. Despite greater access to healthcare and information, we are experiencing a nutritional crisis, from supersized (not to be mistaken for soupersized) portions to the greater affordability of fast food to our affinity for sugar. It seems we are retreating in the face of information overload and mercurial evidence that has all the consistency of DC’s climate (bread is good! Actually, bread is very very bad! Never mind, it’s good again! But too much is REALLY bad!)
In times like these, it’s helpful to keep a shortlist of rock-solid principles to help guide you towards the right choices. Ask yourself, “Is it fresh? Is it made locally? Would Soupermom (or your grandmother) recognize the ingredients? Does it contain high levels of sodium and fat or preservatives?” Actively incorporating these questions into your shopping routine, and sticking to them, will help you lead the life you’ve learned!
Locavores of DC, unite! By now, we all know local food is better for the environment, but here are 3 reasons why buying local food benefits YOU personally:
- Lower taxes! According to the American Farmland Trust, “farms contribute more in taxes than they require in services, whereas most development contributes less in taxes than the cost of required services.” Last time we checked, carrots don’t pay tolls and butternut squash doesn’t dial 911.
- It tastes better. The crops are picked when they’re at their peak of flavor and come fleshed out with genetic diversity — producing an engaging variety in shape, color, and overall taste.
- It’s better for you. You may have heard that the average food travels 1,500 miles before it gets to your plate. This is true. And disturbing. The shorter the time between the farm and your table (or spoon), the more nutrients and enzymes are retained!
Juice cleanses are the latest fad in the health world, hailed by nutritionists and celebrities alike. Don’t get me wrong — it’s great to supplement your diet with that cold-pressed kale or beet juice (as long as it’s local!). But if you’re looking to lose weight or “detoxify” your body, there’s many reasons why a diet exclusively made of soup (a Soupergirl cleanse!) is healthier than one that consists solely of vegetable juice. Here are some reasons why a “soup cleanse” is healthier than a “juice cleanse:”
- Fiber, fiber, fiber. “Fibre” if you’re British. - Diversity of nutrients. There’s many extremely nutritious ingredients, such as garlic and olive oil, that just don’t work in juice form. While it’s physically possible to run garlic through the juicer, the taste will be enough to kill several vampires.
- Expense. Let’s face it. Juice is expensive. And if you’re making your own, it takes time. As a sustainable diet over multiple weeks, Soupergirl soup is a much more affordable alternative to juice.

What’s in a label? For a lot of “organic,” “natural,” and “healthy” foods, it‘s a whole lot of bunk.
A recent article in ABC Health explores how processed foods can undergo a marketing spin and be sold as “low in fat,” “high fiber,” “natural,” and “wholesome” — but fail to meet health and nutrition standards.
Commercial and canned soups are the main culprit here — reading their nutritional labels often requires a degree in translation studies. And a good pair of bifocals. Your best bet? Stick with a whole-foods, plant-based diet! Or you can just eat Soupergirl for every meal. That’s fine with us.
